The Big Three

Carpenter Ants are large ants that prefer dead, damp wood in which to build nests. There are over a thousand other species in the genus Camponotus, but the most likely species to be infesting a house in the United States is the Black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus.

The bedbug (or bed bug) is an insect of the family Cimicidae that lives by feeding on the blood of warm-blooded hosts like us. Its name comes from its preferred habitat: mattresses, sofas, and other furniture. As their name suggests, bedbugs are mainly active at night.

Termiteslive in colonies that, at maturity, number from several hundred to several million individuals. A typical colony contains nymphs (semi-mature young), workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals of both genders, sometimes containing several egg-laying queens. Termites mostly feed on dead plant material, generally in the form of wood, leaf litter, soil, or animal dung, and about 10% of the estimated 4,000 species are economically significant as pests that can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops or plantation forests.
